In brief: Monthly inflation rises in Chile

*Chile’s national statistics institute (INE) has released the inflation figures for August, showing a monthly inflation rate of 0.6% and an annual rate of 4.1%. This is up from monthly inflation rate of 0.1% in July, when the annual rate was 3.5%. Of the 13 categories of products and services measured by the INE, eight measured a monthly rise in prices and three registered monthly deflation in August, while two categories, education and various goods and services, posted zero price variation. The categories with the greatest monthly inflation rates were transport (+1.6%) and food and non-alcoholic drinks (+1.4%). The greatest monthly price decreases were registered in information and communication, as well as insurance and financial services, which both registered decreases of 0.3%. The latest figures were accompanied by the decision of the central bank (BCCh) to maintain the benchmark interest rate at 4.5%, which it attributed to continuing global uncertainty and risk as well as a lower-than-expected performance by the local economy. This represents the sixth consecutive occasion that the BCCh has voted to maintain the rate at 4.5%.
