COLOMBIA: New ‘golden age’ for Colombia-US ties?

Colombia’s President Abelardo de la Espriella heralded a new “golden age” for bilateral relations with the US this week during a visit to the country by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the first leg of a three-nation regional tour. While Colombia has traditionally enjoyed the tag of closest US ally in Latin America over the last three decades, relations became increasingly strained during the previous administration led by Gustavo Petro (2022-2026). De la Espriella wants to revive the lustre of the historic alliance, with trade and security cooperation paramount.
