*Mexico’s navy ministry (Semar) has announced full or partial closures of six ports along the Pacific coast in line with preparations for Hurricane Polo, which is approaching the coastline as a category 5 storm. The ports of Acapulco and Zihuatanejo (Guerrero state) have been closed to all types of vessels, while the ports of Manzanillo (Colima), Marqués (Guerrero), Lázaro Cárdenas (Michoacán), and Puerto Escondido (Oaxaca) have been closed to smaller vessels. In the latest update on social media, Semar stated that the hurricane remained a category 5 storm and that at 9:00pm local time on 22 September “it was located 283km south-southwest of Acapulco, with sustained winds of 268km/h and gusts of 325km/h”, while it is expected to move west-northwest “parallel to the national coasts”. In a press release, Semar explained that it had activated its naval plan in its prevention phase in states along the Pacific coast, “where naval personnel are on standby to provide support to the civilian population should it be necessary”. President Claudia Sheinbaum in her morning press conference assured that, according to the latest information, the hurricane will not make direct landfall but will “skirt” the Pacific coast, with the states of Jalisco, Colima, and Michoacán most affected. She urged those living along the Pacific coast to “stay very alert” and to pay attention to the latest updates.
