*Mexico’s deputy minister for foreign trade,
Luis Rosendo Gutiérrez, has said that Mexico and the US had agreed to postpone the fourth round of talks over the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which the US
opted on 1 July not to renew for another 16 years, triggering an annual review process. The latest round of talks was initially meant to take place the week of 21 September but last week the
Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported that they would take place on 28-29 September in Washington. Gutiérrez, who made his comments to the media following the bi-national convention in Mexico City of the American Society of Mexico business group, was cited as saying that they could now take place in October. He was also cited as saying that the delay owed to scheduling conflicts, including the visit by China’s President
Xi Jinping to the US. Despite the pause in formal negotiation rounds, Gutiérrez said technical coordination with the US Trade Representative’s Office (USTR) was a
“daily” occurrence.
