Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has emphasised his commitment to fiscal responsibility in a speech to business representatives ahead of the 4 October first round of the presidential election.
“We’ve always been clear that fiscal stability is mandatory – it isn’t an achievement of the government, it’s an obligation,” he said, adding that when
“the accounts become unbalanced, it’s the poorest people who pay the price”. He said that his government, which took office in January 2023, inherited a fiscal deficit of 2.8% of GDP, and that this year his government has delivered a fiscal surplus of 0.1%, which he said,
“demonstrates that we’re on the path to returning Brazil to fiscal responsibility”. More broadly, Lula said that his
“dream” is to
“transform this country into a middle-class country” and said that business leaders should support higher wages as this would accelerate the growth of a consumer society that would strengthen all aspects of the economy.
