*Colombia’s President
Abelardo de la Espriella has announced that his government will begin discussions with the International Monetary Fund (IMF)
“to seek a negotiated way out of the crisis that we inherited from the corrupt and irresponsible people who preceded us”. De la Espriella, who took office on 7 August, said that talks with the IMF, which would be led by Finance Minister
Miguel Gómez, are needed because the government’s
“income is lower than its debt payments and its running costs, and therefore it must resort to more and more debt”. He said that
“the public finances can’t take any more”. De la Espriella has accused the previous administration led by
Gustavo Petro (2022-2026) of concealing the true extent of Colombia’s fiscal difficulties, which he said had forced an increase in the new government’s
budget for 2027 due to uncosted expenses inherited from his predecessor.
