In brief: Mexico’s trade surplus up in August

*Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has announced a trade surplus of US$605m in August. This is up from a deficit of US$848m in July and down from a surplus of US$4.06bn in June. Exports rose 40.4% year-on-year to US$78.01bn, while imports climbed 34.2% to US$77.41bn. According to Inegi, the increase in the trade balance from July to August was the result of an increase in the surplus of non-oil exports – which went from US$2.81bn in July to US$4.05bn in August – as well as a smaller deficit in the balance of oil products, which went from US$3.66bn to US$3.44bn. In the first eight months of the year, total exports were US$549.40bn, up 29.3% year-on-year, while total imports were US$539.54bn, up 26.8%, leaving a surplus of US$9.86bn.
