In brief: US lifts restrictions on Mexican airlines

*Mexico’s foreign (SRE) and transport (SICT) ministries have announced that the US is lifting restrictions that prevented Mexican airlines from opening new flights to the US from two airports in Mexico City (CDMX). In a joint statement, the ministries said that the US Department of Transport (DoT) had revoked restrictions on the Benito Juárez International Airport (AICM), the main CDMX airport, and the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA), some 50km from CDMX, which were imposed in October last year, following coordination between the Mexican and US governments and “progress made in fulfilling bilateral aviation commitments”. The ministries stated the announcement “represents a significant step forward for air connectivity between the two countries and once again opens the possibility of developing routes and frequencies from AICM and AIFA to the US market”. Specifically, the measure revokes order 213-2, through which the DoT had restricted existing, proposed, and future operations by Mexican carriers. The ministries said this was the result of a process of dialogue and technical cooperation between the two governments, which was strengthened by agreements made in May 2026. The restrictions announced in October 2025 blocked or cancelled over a dozen existing and planned routes by Mexican airlines to the US, due to concerns over Mexico’s compliance with a 2015 bilateral air transport agreement.
