PANAMA: Panama-Colombian relations tested

President Ricardo Martinelli has placed a strain on ties with his Colombian peer, Juan Manuel Santos, following his decision to grant “territorial asylum" to a former director of the Colombian intelligence service (DAS), who is a suspect in a major wire-tapping scandal which took place under the previous Alvaro Uribe administration (2002-2010). Widely believed to be a personal favour to Uribe, who is also being investigated in relation to this case, the move deals a knock to a relationship which has otherwise strengthened under Martinelli, motivated largely by a shared security agenda.
