PANAMA: Martinelli challenged by corruption

Having fought the 2009 election on an anti-corruption platform, President Ricardo Martinelli last month faced one of the biggest challenges to the credibility of his government after allegations of an organised crime network within the attorney general's office (MP) precipitated the resignation of its chief, Giuseppe Bonissi - a close Martinelli ally. The scandal, which broke under US pressure, follows US involvement in a major blow to the reputation of another key institution - the Panama Canal Authority (ACP).
