The Dominican press is full of speculation regarding whether
President Leonel Fernández will seek re-election in May 2012. This is
specifically prohibited in the new constitution, which was drawn up under
Fernández in 2009, but he has strong backing from factions within his Partido de
la Liberación Dominicana (PLD). It sees Fernández as a shoo-in in 2012 as the
credibility of the main opposition Partido Revolucionario Dominicano (PRD) has
not recovered since the dismal performance of its president Hipólito Mejía
(2000-04), who presided over a heavy economic contraction and
