EL SALVADOR: An historic day for the FMLN

The ruling left-wing Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN) assumed leadership of congress at the start of the month, signifying the first time that the Left has presided over the legislature. While likely to subject the already tested relationship between the more moderate President Mauricio Funes and the radical orthodox FMLN leadership (of which the new congress president, Sigfrido Reyes, is a key figure) to further scrutiny, the changeover takes place at a critical time for the ruling party, with congressional and municipal elections scheduled for March 2012. Reyes, meanwhile, underlined as a priority the need to boost the credibility of the legislature - El Salvador's least trusted institution. This follows other efforts to restore faith in the democratic political party system.
