The ruling left-wing Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación
Nacional (FMLN) assumed leadership of congress at the start of the month,
signifying the first time that the Left has presided over the legislature. While
likely to subject the already tested relationship between the more moderate
President Mauricio Funes and the radical orthodox FMLN leadership (of which the
new congress president, Sigfrido Reyes, is a key figure) to further scrutiny,
the changeover takes place at a critical time for the ruling party, with
congressional and municipal elections scheduled for March 2012. Reyes,
meanwhile, underlined as a priority the need to boost the credibility of the
