Sandra Torres de Colom has put an end to the speculation. On 8 March,
International Women's Day, she confirmed her intention to run as presidential
candidate for the ruling centre-left Unidad Nacional de la Esperanza (UNE) and
its ally, the Gran Alianza Nacional (Gana), in the September 2011 general
elections, despite the apparent constitutional ban on her candidacy. The
prospect of another potentially illegal presidential bid in the region
(following that of Nicaragua's President Daniel Ortega - see previous page) is
likely to attract international attention. With another two high profile
candidates also facing possible constitutional hurdles, the battle for the
presidency will begin in the recently elected constitutional court (CC), the
country's highest court of appeal.End of preview - This article contains approximately 916 words.
