PANAMA: Martinelli flip-flops over mining

President Ricardo Martinelli this month bowed to popular pressure and agreed to repeal the recently approved changes to the 1963 mining law which would have opened the sector up to foreign government investment. Martinelli's reversal signifies the second major political defeat by his pro-business government since taking office in July 2009, following his U-turn over the so-called Ley Chorizo (his failed attempt at weakening union and environmental legislation) in July last.
