President Ricardo Martinelli is facing a fresh embarrassment over
alleged meddling in the judiciary after a congressional committee revealed that
a series of appeals had been filed against José Abel Almengor, one of two
supreme court judges he appointed in December 2009. Almengor is accused of being
behind a plot to oust the former attorney general, Ana Matilde Gómez, in 2010.
The allegations, which have already seen one prominent official fall, will
exacerbate international concern - which has come most publicly from the US via
recent US embassy cables released by WikiLeaks - regarding the
politicization of justice in the country. End of preview - This article contains approximately 490 words.
