CHILE: Embassy bombing seen as 'isolated' and motiveless

On 6 August the Brazilian embassy in Santiago was the target of a bombing attack with a rudimentary explosive device. It was the ninth bombing this year with similar devices. In the absence of any claim of responsibility, the governments of both Chile and Brazil quickly wrote off the incident as an isolated event with no specific political agenda as far as Brazil was concerned. Indeed, the Chileans were openly sceptical about being able to identify the bomber (or bombers).
