The Southern Cone is an important producer of commodities. If a world recession cuts demand for commodities, the effect on the region's economies could be severe. The region is a geo-politically important producer of soft commodities (particularly soya and other oilseeds, wheat, meat, fruit and also coffee). Iron ore is an important export from Brazil while copper is a crucial export for Chile. Perhaps most intriguingly, what happens to oil and gas prices over the next couple of years could determine how quickly Brazil develops its huge new oilfields in the deepwaters of the Santos basin.
