Greenpeace slams Lula government

On 1 June the international environmental activist network, Greenpeace, published a report entitled 'Slaughtering the Amazon' directly establishing a link between the destruction of the Amazon rainforest with patterns of global beef consumption. The report was very critical of the Lula government, accusing it of directly enabling increased deforestation through its policies in support of the national beef industry. Lula's environment minister, Carlos Minc, who like his predecessor is rumoured to be at odds with the government, endorsed the report's findings. The same week, local environmental groups slammed the government's plan to more or less give away 100m hectares of Amazon land, an area the equivalent of France or Spain, to an estimated 1.2m low income peasant farmers, who have effectively been squatting in the region for decades.
