With the argument that Argentina faces no imminent international
threat all Argentine governments since the return of democracy in 1983 have
decreased the armed forces budget as a percentage of GDP. In 2010,
the forces were allocated the smallest budget in the last 40 years and one of the
lowest in the world, equivalent to only 0.9% of GDP, according to government
approved figures published by the World Bank. Argentina, however, is going
against the regional trend, whereby governments have continuously expanded
military budgets to train personnel, improve salaries and modernise old
