ARGENTINA: Electoral victories despite contradictions

On 13 and 20 March, President Cristina Fernández's re-election hopes received a boost following an electoral victory in the province of Catamarca and an electoral performance in the province of Chubut that can be considered, at least, equal to a victory, even if the final result were to confirm the continuation of the Peronismo Federal (PF) through Movimiento Chubut in the provincial executive. However, the background of Lucía Corpacci, the governor-elect of Catamarca, which evokes the 40 year rule of that province by the orthodox Peronist Saadi family, of which she is a member, and the unexpected public confrontation with the highly controversial trade unionist Hugo Moyano, serve as reminders that the continuation in power of the so-called Peronism of the Left, led by the ruling Frente para la Victoria (FPV), depends on the support of segments of the more traditional right-wing factions of the Partido Justicialista (PJ).
