On 21 November the Consejo Nacional Electoral (CNE) formally called
elections for 26 April 2009. This is about two months later than the government
originally envisaged, but politicians and electoral supervisors will still have
to work quickly to ensure the process is a success. The next hurdle for most
politicians will be winning primary elections to secure party nominations. Some
of these elections are imminent: in Guayas, the bastion of the opposition to
President Rafael Correa, the first set of primaries will come on 14
