On 22 November Brazil's
president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, telephoned President Rafael Correa of
Ecuador to say how unhappy he was at Ecuador's decision to take legal action
against a Brazilian bank. Lula underlined his irritation by recalling Brazil's
ambassador to Ecuador, Antonio Marques Porto, for consultations. On 1 December
Brazil's foreign minister, Celso Amorim, gave an interview to a leading
Brazilian newspaper, Folha de São Paulo

in which he said Marques was not likely to return to Quito any time
soon.
