ECONOMY: Record coffee prices fuel one locomotive

Juan Valdez is once again the man holding the proverbial key to Colombia's agricultural future. The three-decade record prices for Arabica coffee, which are expected to remain stable within the range of US$2.5-US2.7 per pound, are predicted to become the main force behind Colombia's agricultural growth. Agriculture is one of the five so-called 'locomotives' of the economic plan put forth by the administration of President Juan Manuel Santos which, thanks in part to the record coffee prices, grew by 4.5% in the last quarter of 2010.
