Elections in Uruguay, Venezuela, Chile and Brazil produce a clutch of unexpected outcomes

It was a very mixed electoral Sunday on 31 October. The most important contest, the one for the presidency of Uruguay, ended on an uncertain note, with the size of Tabaré Vázquez's victory still to be confirmed. In two other countries, Venezuela and Chile, there were undisputed winners in the regional and local elections: Hugo Chávez in the former, Christian Democrat leader Adolfo Zaldí­var in the latter. In Brazil, Lula's PT saw clear progress in the municipal arena clouded by defeats in two of the major cities in which it had invested most effort, while the PSDB saw its emergence as the leading opposition force confirmed.
