It was a very mixed electoral Sunday on 31 October. The most important contest, the one for the presidency of Uruguay, ended on an uncertain note, with the size of Tabaré Vázquez's victory still to be confirmed. In two other countries, Venezuela and Chile, there were undisputed winners in the regional and local elections: Hugo Chávez in the former, Christian Democrat leader Adolfo Zaldívar in the latter.
