ECUADOR: Seven votes needed to oust, 21 to hang on

The clock is ticking for President Lucio Gutiérrez - but also for the opposition parties who want to remove him from office. On 4 November congressmen from four parties formally submitted a petition to initiate impeachment proceedings. This sets in motion a train of events which places heavy demands on both sides. Gutiérrez enters this phase hobbled by the departure of his chief political operator, interior minister Raúl Baca.
