CHILE: Senate shortens presidential term

Future Chilean presidents will rule for only four years, instead of the current six, and will be barred from seeking immediate reelection. This latest item on the constitutional reform agenda was approved in the senate by the combined vote of the ruling Concertación alliance and Renovación Nacional (RN), the most centrist of the opposition parties. The farther-right Unión Demócrata Independiente (UDI), defying the wishes of coalition leader Joaquí­n Laví­n, opposed the change.
