The Zapatistas were in the news over the holiday season, not so much because of the uneventful celebration of the 11th anniversary of their uprising as due to two very different developments. The first was the debut of their leader, Subcomandante Marcos, as an author of crime novels. The second was the establishment of the first 'Zapatista municipality' outside the state of
