Supreme court deadline for Chilean rights trials

Chile's supreme court, preempting legislation promised by the government, last week issued a resolution allowing judges only six months to conclude their investigations into abuses committed during the Pinochet dictatorship. This has provoked uproar among the associations of victims' relatives and rights organisations. According to Human Rights Watch, it will 'cripple efforts to promote accountability for past human rights violations'.
