CHILE-PERU: Santiago rebuffs demand for an apology

The Chilean government has rejected outright a demand by Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo for an apology over the sale of munitions to Ecuador at the time of the 1995 Alto Cenepa war between that country and Peru. The manner in which Toledo has phrased his demand strongly suggests that he is playing the issue politically, to reverse his unpopularity at home - and perhaps also to set the scene for reviving Peru's maritime boundary dispute with Chile.
