BRAZIL: Embarrassment for Lula as deforestation peaks again

The government of President Lula da Silva last week lost another ally, the environmentalist Partido Verde (PV), after figures were published which showed that deforestation in the Amazonian tropical jungle reached the second-highest level ever last year: 26,129 square kilometres. The PV, echoing the judgment of such NGOs as Greenpeace and the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF), said this proved the failure of Lula's much publicised drive against deforestation.
