EL SALVADOR: Business puts forward ideas

The main business association in the country, the Asociación Nacional de la Empresa Privada (Anep), which claims to speak for 10,000 companies across 55 industries, has come up with ideas for kick-starting the economy. It has sent its proposals, which took six months to draw up, to the four candidates for the presidential elections next year.

The four candidates are: Elías Antonio Saca (from the rightwing and ruling Arena); Schafik Handal (from the leftwing FMLN); Héctor Silva from the left-of-centre alliance between the Partido Democrático Cristiano and the Centro Democrático Unido, and Rafael Machuca from the PCN. The three main opinion polling organisations all have Saca well ahead of the field.

Anep argues that the next government should pay particular attention to its rural policy and provide support for small and medium-sized businesses. It argues that these two sectors are the main source of jobs in the economy and their success will ensure the economy's stability.
