COLOMBIA: Southern border events raise questions about the war

A major attack by Farc guerrillas in Putumayo - in which at least 19 soldiers were killed - has raised doubts about the efficacy of the army's southward drive under Plan Patriota and about the extent to which the conflict has spilled over the Ecuadorean border. Evidence has also been emerging about a remarkable spread of coca-growing in the southwestern department of Nariño.
