El Niño arrives…and goes

There are clear signs that El Niño, the inversion of traditional weather patterns in South America, has arrived. At least 35 people have died in floods in eastern Bolivia where it has been raining heavily for most of the past two months. El Niño's effects have been more muted in Peru and Ecuador which suffered heavily in the last major El Niño in 1998. In late February Australian meteorologists declared that the phenomenon had passed and would most likely be succeeded by a reversion to normal weather patterns but the weather that arrived would be more intense than usual.
