VENEZUELA-US: Nascent Telesur to be countered by US broadcasts
Hugo Chávez 's new venture, Telesur, a Latin American television broadcasting company devoted to providing alternative news to that which emanates from the US, went on the air on 24 July. Three days earlier the US House of Representatives approved legislation authorising the US to direct radio and television broadcasts to Venezuela to counter what was portrayed as Chávez 's drive to 'snuff out' free expression in the media.
