Despite having reversed his predecessors' policy on opposing the extradition of Argentine human rights violators, President Néstor Kirchner said on 30 July that these people 'ought to be tried in Argentina'. He followed this up by urging the supreme court to speed up its ruling on the constitutionality of the laws that have shielded them from prosecution.
That same day a survey by Ricardo Bouvier y Asociados showed that 64.9% of respondents also believed that trials should take place in Argentina; only 25.1% approved of trials abroad.
