MEXICO: Congress makes violence a political issue

The government has confirmed that it has ordered the 'strengthening' of the México Seguro operation launched in June, but has so far provided no details except that this involves deploying more personnel in certain parts of the country - and that it will not entail entrusting the overall coordination of the campaign to the army. The vagueness of government statements has prompted congress to demand formal reports from the executive on what it has been doing to confront drug-related violence and on the results achieved so far.
