On 8 August representatives of Lavalas turned up at the provisional electoral council to register their party for the elections. This was hailed as a step towards more 'inclusive' elections by chief UN representative Juan Gabriel Valdés, who days earlier had urged Aristide's followers to register, saying that this was 'essential and fundamental to these elections'. However, one member of the registration party, Rudy Hériveaux, a former president of the chamber of deputies, suggested that the move might just be tactical. Registration of Lavalas, he said, would 'force the judicial authorities to release the political prisoners'.
