URUGUAY: The problems of a strong peso

At the end of November the peso strengthened through the Ur$20:US$1 level. The strength of the peso is now a problem for Uruguayan policymakers. In real terms it is now about 30% stronger against the US dollar than its average for the past 40 years. As the Euro is even weaker than the dollar, Uruguayan exporters are in an even more difficult position in European markets.
