METALS: Paraguay's aluminium industry

Rí­o Tinto Alcan (RTA), a subsidiary of the British-Australian mining company Rio Tinto, which has a 30% share in la Escondida, Chile's biggest copper mine, is now planning to invest US$3.5bn to develop an aluminium industry in Paraguay. The project is based on Paraguay's cheap electricity: the bauxite needed for the plant will be shipped in.   The project will be Paraguay's biggest since the construction of the two hydro-electric dams that will provide the electricity for the new smelter.
