CHILE: Government prepares for huge national strike today

The government is bracing itself today for the largest national strike since Chile's return to democracy. The umbrella trade union organisation, CUT, with 640,000 members, is hoping for widespread participation of more than 60% (some six million) of Chile's workforce. Teachers, health and transport workers, public prosecutors and public officials will all go on strike. Only bus drivers and doctors have said they will not participate.
