Panama's FTA with Taiwan seen as model. Last week Panama and Taiwan signed a free-trade agreement designed to remove within a decade the tariffs on 95% of the products they exchange. Two-way trade between them has been running close to US$600m a year. Beyond its intrinsic value, the agreement is seen in Taipei as a model for future deals with the Caribbean Basin countries with which it continues to enjoy diplomatic relations: Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama and the Dominican Republic - all of which were represented at a summit held in Taipei on 21 August.
