The Canadian-owned mining company Noranda has suspended construction of a US$2.7bn aluminium plant in the south of Chile. Noranda, part of the Falconbridge group, said that it was unhappy with the fact that political rather than technical concerns look set to determine the project's feasibility. Specifically the company is thought to have been irritated by the Chilean government's request that the precise site of the project be changed. Economy Minister Jorge Rodriguez said that he was surprised by the decision, but that he understood the reasons behind it.
