Although the deadline, set by the supreme court, for the national assembly to select the Consejo Nacional Electoral (CNE) has expired, the politicians want to have another go when they reassemble on 25 August for an extraordinary session. The CNE will run the referendum on whether President Hugo Chávez can remain in office (should the referendum ever be called) and any subsequent election.
