NICARAGUA: Retaining 400 missiles is national policy

Nicaraguan Defence Minister Avil Ramí­rez has asked the national assembly to 'depoliticise' the issue of the country's remaining surface-to-air missiles, noting that there is a national consensus that Nicaragua should retain about 400 of them. 'This, he said, 'is the position of Nicaragua [as a whole]. It coincides with the US in some aspects, but it is a national position.' The US has been demanding the destruction of all remaining missiles.
