ARGENTINA: Kirchner denounces complex Duhalde-Menem plot

'They made me do it,' appeared to be the excuse President Néstor Kirchner was offering when, on 25 August, he finally abandoned his policy of carefully refraining from repressing protest actions by the 'piqueteros', the unemployed now demanding an increase in state subsidies [WR-05-33]. His reasoning is that the protesters are extreme leftwingers seeking confrontation in order to provide the right with a motive to demand repression. Last week he added a layer to the explanation: behind it all are former presidents Eduardo Duhalde and Carlos Menem.
