The government claimed that the general strike called by the Central Obrera Boliviana yesterday was a failure. The COB admitted that the strike had got off to a slow start but claimed that support would increase over the next few days. The strike was called to back the roadblocks set up by peasants on the Altiplano around La Paz last week. These roadblocks, which are mostly composed of rocks on roads, are being cleared by the police and army.
