VENEZUELA: Tension rises as petitioning period draws closer

The international mediators in the country are becoming worried by the heightened tension as the periods for gathering signatures on the petitions calling for recall referenda draw closer. The first petitions, calling for recall referenda on opposition congressmen, goes into circulation on 21 November for four days. The big petition is the one calling for a referendum on whether President Hugo Chávez should remain in office. That starts to circulate on 28 November, also for four days. Altogether 72 recall petitions will be circulated.
