MEXICO: US$943m spent on bribery

Transparency International, an international NGO which monitors corruption, reckons that Mexicans spent M$10.6bn (US$943m) on bribes in the 12 months to October 2003. Transparency's local affiliate, which monitors corruption in Mexico, said that it had recorded 101m separate acts of corruption. The most common was paying off parking officials to avoid having cars towed away.
