VENEZUELA: Chavistas cut signature claims

The government's supporters backed away, dramatically, from the claim made by Vice President José Rangel that it registered the support of 7.9m people in its petitions seeking recall referenda on 38 (now in fact 37) opposition deputies. The supporters of President Hugo Chávez said that in fact 2,669,684 had signed the 4.2m petitions calling for the recall referenda on the opposition-supporting deputies.
